"Summer Holiday" visits Ulverston Brewery

 More  1990's telly from Joyce Wilding.   Our main interest here is in the visit to the Brewery, but again I thought you'd enjoy seeing the whole piece.

This is a Holiday programme from North West Tonight...Bill Cubin and and the Laurel and Hardy museum are featured again, we visit Argyle Street and we see the presenters surrounded by a crowd of kids in Stan And Ollie masks...are you in that crowd?

We hear about some local cuisine, and we get trips to Holker Hall and up to Millom too.

In the Brewery- and in the Rose and Crown- we meet Head Brewer Mike McKinna and Paul Fleming from CAMRA and we see a lot of the Brewery workforce. It would be nice to put names to faces so if you recognise anyone please let us know.

Hello, and here we are with part 2 of Hartley's Head Brewer Eric Simpson's personal history of the Brewery, as publsihed in the Brewing History Society Journal in 1992. Eric writes about incidents in the bottling store, light fingered colleagues, dubious personal encounters in the Snipe Inn in Barrow , and the ways in which the workforce  rubbed up against each other in their day to day, including Young Harry Walmsley, Billy Preston and Bob Cloudsdale, seen here in Erics own photograph. Last Orders...for now

  This will be the last of our posts for a while, the project website will be up soon and we'll be providing a link here. We are not exactly drawing the bolts: there'll be chances to make  some additions to  the site and the archive. Hopefully we will soon be able to visit  a few friends with stories and pictures to share. And there will be more events. Watch the usual spaces. We have had some very nice comments from participants and visitors to the archive and as you can see, things are still arriving. GEORGE AND JENNY WINDER REMEMBERED BY THEIR SON PAUL

Paul Winder is an exiled Ulverston lad with a strong family connection to Hartley's. Over the next couple of weeks we'll hearing about his Mother and Father and  their work at the Brewery up to the 80's and the personal touches they brought to it.. And on the right is his Dad, George.. "My mother and father both worked in the brewery. Dad was the boilerman (George Winder) up until his retirement in around 1984. My mum used to clean the offices (Jenny Winder).  Dad was a well known character in the town and had a number of little sidelines going alongside his job. The used hops were very popular with local gardeners and they used to come and fill bags to use on their roses etc. The old oak barrels, when cut in half by the coopers made excellent planters. Dad also provided a "pet cremation" service on occasion.  In those days, the brewery workers were allowed 3 bottles of beer a day. Dad used to bring them home with him and save them up until
